Mallorca is Spain's largest & best-known island. Its capital Palma, is also the capital of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. Since the 1950s, the advent of mass tourism radically changed both the city and the island, and also attracted foreigners to work and live there. It's less than a two hour drive across the island but still manages to attract over ten million visitors a year. It is increasingly attracting families to move and settle there due to its fabulous climate, cosmopolitan mix of people and growing work opportunities, particularly in the tourist trade.
The official languages of Mallorca are Catalan and Spanish. The local dialect of Catalan is Mallorquí, even though the dialects are slightly different in most villages. Typically, young Mallorcans are bilingual in Catalan and Spanish, with some knowledge of English. The members of the Spanish Royal Family traditionally spend their summer holidays in Mallorca and it is also home to world tennis number one Rafael Nadal.
