Family-Friendly Holidays in The Costa Brava

The Costa Brava has long since been a popular holiday destination for families. The stunning stretch of coastline extends from Lloret de Mar in the south to Port de La Selva just south of the French border and is equally popular with both foreign and local visitors. The region has, for many years, been a popular getaway for wealthy Barcelona residents (many of whom own second homes in the area) and with northern European holiday makers – predominantly from the UK, France, Scandinavia, Holland, Germany and Switzerland. For anyone who has visited the area, it is not hard to see why the Costa Brava is so popular with families. Unlike the better known Costas in the south of Spain, the area remains comparatively underdeveloped (with the exception of some of the larger towns to the south such as Tossa, Calella and Lloret de Mar) and many of the coastal towns have retained their charm of yesteryear. The coastline is punctuated by stunning little bays with child friendly beaches, welcoming cafes and restaurants and the region offers a host both inland and water based activities. There is also a wide choice of accommodation available to the visitor from campsites to 5-star hotels. This is what makes the area such an attractive proposition for families looking for an idyllic Mediterranean holiday. The most sought after areas include S’Agaro, the Cap de Begur and, further north, the bay of Roses – all within a two hour drive of Barcelona and within 45 minutes of Girona and the nearby airport.
