Question:
Could someone recommend any English speaking playgroup in Begur/Pals/Palafrugell area? Does anybody know of any French immersion summer camp? Posted by Eva (22nd May 08)
Post your reply here
Helen (in Begur): No! I don't know of any ! So much so that I put an ad in the Costa Brava Resident magazine to see if anyone would be interested in meeting up and forming one, however I didn't get 1 reply!! I would be happy to pass my details onto Eva. I have english friends so it maybe we could meet up with us in the summer on the beach/park or something like that, (I know my spanish isn't going to improve, like this!!)
Sorry I have no more info!

Charmaine - 16th May
Question: We are hoping to have become the host family for an American au pair. Does anyone know whether it's possible for her to obtain a visa for her to come to stay with us for more than the 90 days that she is allowed as a tourist, but for less than a year?
If she comes as a tourist, is there any way of extending her stay once the 90 days have expired?
We are hoping to have her with us by sometime at the beginning of June. If anyone has been the host of a non-EU au pair, we would be grateful for any information and tips.

Emre - 14th May
Question: As a family we are thinking about moving to Barcelona for a year, from USA. Our main concerns are school and housing, if there is any information you can share with us, or point us to the right direction in that respect, we would be grateful. Posted by Emre (14th May 08)
Post your reply here
Carrie: Hi Emre. Firstly I suggest you take a look at our section on International Schools in Barcelona which tells you about which curriculum each school offers, what language the children are taught in and the curriculum it follow. Many American families opt for the American school when they are in Barcelona for a short period of time, and we would be happy to put you in contact with mothers from the school if that helps.
With regards to property, any of the following people would be happy to help you with accommodation: kate at LocoLocations (kate@locolocations.com), Victoria at Lucas Fox (victoria@lucasfox.com), Christina at Modus Vivendi (christina@mvbarcelona.com) or Catherine at Casa Home Search (info@casahomesearch.com)
You might also like to contact the American Society of Barcelona www.amersoc.com
I hope this helps and best of luck with the move!
Christina: Hello, I saw your request for help with housing in Barcelona. If I can help you search for property in or around Barcelona please contact me directly at Christina@mvbarcelona.com with your daytime contact number and I will call you to chat about what you are looking for. Christina -
Lorraine - 12th May
Question: Hi, We live in Sitges and have friends coming to stay who have a small child. We want to buy a stair gate. Can anyone recommend a place to get one? Many thanks Posted by Lorraine (12th May 08)
Post your reply here
Rebecca: Dear Lorraine, I bought my stair gates from Aki hardware store in Vilanova (Ronda Europa 46, 08800 Vilanova I La Geltru Tel 938144608) as we have particularly wide stair wells and I needed expandable ones. Alternatively you can get stair gates from IKEA (probably the cheapest around) as well as a whole host of security products i.e cupboard clasps etc. I will also put a message on our buy/sell message board as well incase anyone has a second hand gate. When do you need it by? All the best Rebecca
Rebecca: Funnily enough, Lucy has just posted a message on our Notice Board to say she is selling a second hand stairgate for 5 euros

Question: Hi, I have a client moving to Barcelona with a child with special needs. If anyone has any information regarding schools, centres or facilities for children in Barcelona with special needs all information would be gratefully received. Posted by Christina (7th May 08)
Post your reply here
Rebecca: Hi Cristina, What sort of information are you after? Barcelona City Council offer early care services for special needs children up to the age of six, offering support for school and social integration and coordination of health, education and social services. It may be your best bet to contact them directly - details below.
Equip Interdisciplinari Per A La Petita Infancia de Ciutat Vella

Jane: The special needs system in the public school can be a little
complicated depending upon the age and level of disability. In my experience the international schools are not quite so well placed for children who require more than help with speech therapy or dyslexia. My daughter is 8 and has quite a high level of special needs, she has been in the Catalan public school system since she was 4 but once she reached 6 it became obvious that the gap between her ability and her peer group was getting greater and that the 4 hours a week of special needs assistance wasn't going to be enough. Last year it was decided between ourselves, the teachers and the educational psychologist from EAP to go for a -compartida' system where she attends regular school for 2 days a week and special needs for the other 3,so far, apart from the commuting it's been an excellent solution. To find the appropriate special needs school we were given a list of recommendations from EAP coordinator and a copy of the brochure which contains all of the available schools. For special needs although there are some which are public and some private foundation the majority are concertada. We made appointments with 7 different places and spent a half day at each before we decided. Its a complicated process and we did it with very poor Catalan and just about adequate Spanish so I know it can be done! We had a lot of pressure from family to send her to an international school but our experience was that none of the ones we looked at had special needs facilities on the level that we required but as I say its all dependent on the individual family. I have done the rounds of testing. speech therapy etc etc mostly within the public systems and would be more than happy to share my experiences or pass on contacts to anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation as it took us about 3 years to really put in place a good team and find a good centre.

Question: I was wondering if any of you have an alternative to overpriced international nurseries for the summer...
(I am moving near to Plaza Espana and have a 3 yr old daughter. Thank you so much Isa Posted by Isa (3rd May 08)
Rebecca: Hi Isa. Have you looked at our section on summer camps? Aside from the international nurseries there are also summer camps being run by 27 nursery schools in Barcelona. Katie Jeune - 29th April
Question: I live just outside Barcelona and my son turns 4 in a month. I just wondered if anyone had any ideas for a birthday party. I would also like to get English food (jelly, sausages etc) Posted by Katie Jeune (29th April 08)
Leila: Whereabouts in Barcelona do you live? Do you have a garden? If so I can recommend hiring a bouncy castle from www.barcelonabounce.com.
Katie: Sorry I actually live in Sitges. Great idea - will check if they can come out here.
Rebecca: Hi Katie, if you dont want to do anything at home, Sitges Play Group (www.sitgesplaygroup.com) hire out their space for birthday parties. My son had his first party there and it was great - came home to a clean, peaceful house! It is a large indoor space, with kitchen and lots of toys for all ages. Alternatively you could ask Planet English (www.planetenglishclub.com). I think they also arrange face painting and arts and crafts. There are also 2 Ludotecas (indoor play centres) just outside Sitges which organise birthday parties. Pizza Marzano (part of the Pizza Express group) in Sitges also organise birthday parties. Hope that helps!
Patricia: Try www.atasteofhome.eu.com for party food (they deliver to Sitges)
Katie: Wow! Thanks for all the help! Lots of ideas here - will let you know what I choose (and write a review of course!)

Question: I am moving to Barcelona just for a year with my husband´s job and am desperate to meet other expat families living in Barcelona. I dont speak Spanish or Catalan and have a little baby so am really worried that I will be lonely. My husband has a job in a Barcelona company and will be working local not expat hours so I might be on my own until 8pm each night. Any help would be soooo welcome! P.S Your site is a fantastic resource - it has made me so much more positive about the move. Posted by Jess Marie Merchant (16th April 08)
Rebecca: Congratulations and dont worry! You will meet other expat families here in Barcelona really easily. There are lots of English-speaking groups and activities here for babies and children, which is how most mums have made friends. Many people will be in the same boat as you and these groups are lifesavers! Here is a list of English-speaking mother and baby groups in Barcelona and English-speaking baby and toddler activities in Barcelona. Question: I would like to start teaching ballet classes to tiny tots 3-5 years and a moms stretch and tone class in english. Once or twice a week. Suggestions where I should start - have checked and classes do not seem to be availabe - unless I have missed something. Would love to hear from you dmelpot@yahoo.co.uk Posted by Deline Thackwray (15th April 08)
Rebecca: Are you looking at Barcelona or outside Barcelona? For example in Sitges there is a lady who already offers Ballet lessons for little ones. If you send me more information on the type of course you will offer and when it would start I will put it on the site
Deline: I am looking at the Barcelona area but I would love to be in contact with the lady from Sitges, perhaps she will be kind enough to give me such much needed advice. I have only been here for a few weeks and not yet had the time to network. Once I know what I am going to do, I will come back to you with info. Thank you again and good luck with your site- it seems to serve very well.

JoJo - 13th April
Question: Am desperate for second hand items for my kids. Do such things exist in Barcelona?
Posted by JoJo (13th April 08)
Rebecca: It is really hard to find second hand goods in Barcelona. A few international nurseries and schools hold such sales (information on these are posted on our site), Sitges Play Group takes part in a large boot sale organised by Sitges City Council four times a year. In the meantime why not browse our second hand buy and sell message board for items across Catalunya
Charmaine: Hello JoJo, There's also a really useful internet page with a baby/children section that puts seller and buyers in contact. The address is www.loquo.com. I think that it is only in Spanish, but I've sold a few baby things through this page.

Annie - 13th April
Question: Am moving to Barcelona with my two children and I want to start the oldest in a guarderia. I am not decided whether to start them in an international nursery or a local one. Do many expat families in Barcelona send their children to nurseries? Do you recommmend any international nurseries and when do I need to apply for guarderia? What age is the youngest they can start as I may consider a place for my youngest, who is 8 months.
Posted by Annie (13th April 08)
Rebecca: Hi Annie Good luck with the move. Barcelona is a great city to live with children. If you look at our school section you will see a parents comments on nurseries as well as a list of international and local nurseries in Barcelona. You would need to apply for a place between 5th and 16th May. If you are late it is likely you wont get a place. You can place babies in nurseries in Barcelona from the age of 4 months so your youngest will be fine. Hope this helps. Rebecca

Question: I have a couple of unrelated questions that I haven't been able to find answers to:
1.) Are there any English speaking breastfeeding classes groups in Barcelona?
2.) Do you know where I can buy soft flannel crib sheets and chenille blankets in Barcelona?
3.) I'm trying to decide on a hospital to give birth at and, at 6 months, am still undecided. I have a list of hospitals here in Barcelona and am now interested in opinions, experiences, and recommendations. Do you have a forum regarding this? I would appreciate any information about hospitals with low c-section rates; hospitals that respect Birth Plans; hospitals that allow partners and dulas to be present; hospitals that are progressive and respectful of the parents choices regarding the childbirth.
4.) Lastly, do you know of any English speaking gynecologists (preferably female), pediatricians, and/or dentists in Barcelona?.

1) Zoe: There are 2 main support groups in BCN- La Liga de la Llet and ALBA Lactancia Materna (you can Google either). La liga operate monthly informative chats in Spanish/Catalan, though I'm sure there are a fair few foreign mums there too. Alba have 5 groups around Barcelona that each meet weekly and are more 'hands on', with practical problem sorting there and then. The one that happens on Monday in Ciutat Vella also has an English speaking qualified consultant that attands (Mondays 4-6pm, centro civico Sant Agosti, Calle Comerc next to chocolate museum). Alba lactancia also operates a 24hour 'emergency' helpline (690 144 500) it is in Spanish but in an emergency situation she would be able to give ypu the number for the English speaker.
2) Rebecca: You may be better off bringing these with you or ordering online. Alternatively you could try El Corte Ingles and Prenatal, both of which have a good stock of baby products.
3) Zoe: The best place for this kind of info is www.barcelonabirth.net. www.crianzanatural.com (Spanish) also have forums on birth and all other baby related stuff. If you want low c-section rate go public (private have as high as 40% rate! Public is about 20%), or, better still- homebirth (with a 5% hospital transfer rate, of which only a small fraction actually need a c-section, do the maths!) Birth plans are very new here, usually they go unheeded but still it's good to take them along as those of us that do pave the way for their eventual integration into the system (fingers crossed). Partners are allowed, doulas occasionally, really depends on hospital. A doula herself will be able to tell you better from her actual experience, go to www.maresdoules.org or www.doulasbarcelona.org. As far as natural birth goes, the Maternidad have a 'protocol' for it. But if you are expecting the same standards in this area as northen Europe, you will be dissapointed.
4) Rebecca: With regards to Paediatricians,, it is kind of go with your local one or ask around parents and forums for a good private. It depends also if you want western medicine, homeopathy.. etc. Dr Faust at Teknon hospital comes highly recommended as an English speaking paediatrician. Dra Leila Onbargi is an American gynocologist who many expat women have used. She is excellent but does not work with many insurance companies so you are best to check before you go to see her. You can also take a look at our services section for Barcelona for recommended dentists -
Question: My husband has booked a week long holiday in Barcelona in July but I am a bit worried as we have 2 children - aged 18 months and 3 years and I am not sure about what to do with them in the day. Obviously with young kids I cant go to museums or some of the larger amusement parks. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Posted by June (22nd March 08)
Post your reply here
Rebecca: Hi June. Barcelona is a wonderful, child-friendly city and I am sure your family will have a fantastic holiday. In regards to how to amuse your kids in the city, I have a 15 month old and he just loves going to the beach with a bucket and spade. If you buy a beach tent (which cost about 20 euros) you can spend the whole day there and your kids can play in the shade (July will be hot!). San Sebastia and Barceloneta are the most popular beaches. They are closer to the town than some of the others so you can more easily nip back to your hotel, to the shops or to a restaurant should you need something for the children. The beaches are very wide and long with a popular stretch of restaurants. Mar Bella beach is about a 20 minute walk north of the Port Olimpic (left facing the water) and probably the most child-friendly of all of Barcelona´s beaches. It is clean and quiet and you can find a children´s play-area, lifeguards, sunbed hire, showers and a beach restaurant (chiringuito). If you fancy a trip out of town, Sitges is a wonderful beach town (about 40 mins on the train from Barcelona) and there are many play parks (with swings, slides and climbing frames) along the seafront. Sausalito beach in Sitges is frequented by many families in Sitges and is definitely worth a trip. I would highly recommend the zoo, as unlike many of the parks here it is litter and dog poo free! By the Zoo is the Park Ciutadella, which has a great play area for children. Located at the top end of the park, near the lake, twice daily toddlers can enjoy free toys and games in addition to the permanent swings and slides. There is even a sprinkler in the summer which the kids love! (11am-2pm every day and 4.30pm-6.30/7pm from mid September to mid June. 5.30pm-8.30pm from mid June to mid September). Park Guell is probably the world´s most enchanting public park created by Barcelona´s most famous son, Antón Gaudí. Loosely based on Hampstead Heath in London, the park boasts sparkling mosaic stairways, multicoloured buildings and fairytale fountains. It is pure fantasty and kids will love it. Please do visit our Parks and Play Areas in Barcelona section for more recommendations and a list of indoor play areas in case you are unlucky with the weather. If you are brave enough to eat out with the kids, please read our member´s recommended child-friendly restaurants in Barcelona. I hope you have a fantastic holiday and this information helps you enjoy the city with your two little ones! For more tips, please do visit our dedicated section on child friendly holidays in Barcelona -

Question: Hi there!! I am new to this site and this is my first message posting. My husband and I and our newborn daughter are relocating to Barcelona from NYC for my husband’s job in the middle of April. My daughter, Alice, will be three months old when we arrive. Unfortunately, I do not speak Spanish, and being new parents, we would love to have some input/recommendations on the following logistical issues: English speaking pediatrician , English/Spanish speaking nanny/housekeeper part time or full time, Recommendation on family friendly neighborhoods, (husband’s work is on Traversera de Gracia ). In past visits I liked El Born district. However, we would need an elevator if on an upper floor. Lactation consultant if available who speaks English. Baby equipment availability to buy or rent Gym recommendation.—I want my prepregnancy body back=)
I am delighted to have found this website and look forward to meeting some of you at the new mom’s groups listed. Thanks so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you. Cary Vaughan (mama to Alice)

Question: In summer 2009 we will be moving to Barcelona. I am interested in finding a part time job that will allow my family to stay for an extended time of a year. We have two teenagers with 3 years of spanish and two elementary children to enroll in school. I'm a full time mum but would like to venture out. My husband is a Park Ranger with lots of trail experience. little spanish

Rebecca: Hi Doreen, Good luck with the move! If you click here you will see a section on schools in Barcelona, which I hope might be useful in regards to choosing a school for your kids - you really need to enrol in March/April to get a place in September. We have a jobs section for Mums, which is updated regularly so hopefully you may find something useful there - click here. If you send us an idea of what you are looking for we can place an ad on the board. Regarding your husband - there are a few trail companies run by Brits located in and around Tarragona, however you probably would need to base yourselves there as it would be a near impossible daily commute from Barcelona. -
Question: We are thinking about taking the family to the Costa Brava this summer but don´t want anything too touristy. I have heard that parts of the Costa Brava are quite built-up, which we would really like to avoid. Can you steer us in the right direction? Thank you
Posted by Caroline (1st Feburary 2008)
Post your reply here
Carrie: The Costa Brava was one of the first regions of Spain to introduce ‘package holidays’ in the 1950s. As a result there was rapid construction of hotels and villas in certain areas of the coastline, notably Lloret de Mar, Calella and Tossa. However, there are now few package tours available on the Costa Brava and the vast majority of this stunning coastline remains untouched and breathtakingly beautiful. I suggest you head to the area known as the ‘Cap de Begur’ which encompasses beautiful towns, villages and bays such as Begur, Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc and Tamariu. Incredibly these places are relatively undiscovered and are perfect for kids of all ages. I also would highly recommend you browse the following magazine articles in praise of the Costa Brava and I am sure you will soon be convinced how much the region has to offer to families who want an unspoilt vacation.

Question: My husband and I are both British and are due our first baby in 4 weeks. As we want the baby to have a British passport do we need to register his birth in Spain? We are not interested in Spanish citizenship.
Posted by Sarah Louise (8th Jan 08)
Post your reply here
Rebecca: Firstly congratulations! In order to obtain a British passport you do need to present a valid Spanish birth certificate. This means that you (or more usually your partner) must go to the civil registry (Registro Civil) office in the town where the baby was born with a certified translation of your marriage certificate, both parties identity documents (passports, NIE etc) as well as the delivery report for the birth which you will receive from the hospital. The civil registry office will grant you a family passport/book (libro de familia) however the British consulate do NOT accept this and you will need to request seperately a birth certificate (certificado literal). Even though you say you are not interested in Spanish citizenship you legally have to register the birth of a child in Spain within 7 days.

Question: I am just about to wean my 6 mnth old baby and would like to buy organic food. I live in St Pere de Ribes and my local supermarket, Can Torreta, doesnt sell it nor does the Caprabo in Sitges. Where can I find it?

Rebecca: In St Pere you can go to the health food shop, Mandala, Crta. Sitges 85, for organic vegetables, fruit and meat. You can even place orders and they will box it up and call you when it is ready to collect.
Caroline: Hi Marie, you can also go to Sabeco in Vilanova for Hipp organic jars and they also sell a small selection of fruit and veg - but no meat. If you drive to Castelldefels you can go to the shopping centre L´Anec Blau where they have an organic supermarket called Veritas.
