" We believe reflexology does wonders for all those ailments common to pregnancy...such as back pain, nausea, reflux, high blood pressure, diabetes etc. There are studies to show that labour times may be shorter and of course by helping the client to feel relaxed and happy it is also affecting the baby too."

How long have you been working as a holistic therapist?
I have been working as a holistic therapist for 4 years and am really enjoying it, I wish I had started sooner!

What inspired you to train as a holistic therapist?
18 years ago, while I was travelling round the world I stayed with my aunt in New Zealand. She has a biodynamic farm, has studied various holistic therapies and has always treated her animals with homeopathy. Eccentric you may think, but I was fascinated when she explained reflexology to me and for years I kept the foot map that she gave me and I practised on friends

What is reflexology and what conditions may it help in general?
Actually the Advertising Standards Authority now prevents us from listing the conditions that it may help. Natural therapies are becoming increasing popular and of course this is not in everyone’s best interests. However, in my experience it is extremely precise and effective therapy and its effects still surprise me! This is why I love it so much. I have really seen some people’s lives change dramatically, It works both physically and mentally so it is a great mood enhancer.

How can reflexology help with fertility issues as well as during and post pregnancy?
Reflexology has been in the press a lot in the decade regarding its use for fertility problems and pregnancy. Many fertility clinics employ reflexologists and it is also used within the NHS. We believe that we can stimulate the reproductive organs to help with egg and sperm production and thicken the lining of the uterus for example, and again, by bringing the body back into balance we believe we help any gynecological problems that may be preventing the client from falling pregnant. For pregnancy we believe it helps prevent or all those ailments common to pregnancy, such as back pain, nausea, reflux, high blood pressure, diabetes etc. There are studies to show that labour times may be shorter and of course by helping the client to feel relaxed and happy it is also affecting the baby too.

What is hypnobirthing?
Hypnobirthing is a breakthrough approach to easier, comfortable birthing. It is based on the theory that if we are relaxed and free from fear whilst giving birth then our body will be allowed to do what nature intended. Fear causes blood to flow away from the uterus just at the time when we need it most! Hypnobirthing offers a course covering in depth prenatal information as well as teaching you how to use self hypnosis and breathing techniques to keep you calm during your baby’s birth. If this is done properly then you will feel intense pressure rather than pain and your birth will be a wonderful, joyful experience.

How does this help during labour?
Of course a natural birth is not everyone’s cup of tea, and sometimes you do not have the choice. However, there are many benefits. Women are able to stay in control of their birth and this gives a strong feeling of empowerment. Natural births, in general, have less need for intervention to increase contractions and there is less need for a vacuum or forceps delivery. You will be able to move around during the birth process and find positions most comfortable for you. You and your baby will recover much more quickly from the birth without potential side effects from drugs. If you use Hypnobirthing for your labour it will be reduced by several hours, be comfortable and your baby will be more relaxed, happy and sleep and feed better.

Do you feel that pregnancy/labour in Spain is too medicalised?
Yes, I do feel that pregnancy/labour in Spain is too medicalised but I believe this will gradually change and become more like the US and the UK. During my pregnancies I missed having prenatal checks with a midwife as my checks with the obstetricians felt professional but rather impersonal. The thing I missed most was that they never offered any information. Here you have to ask, but sometimes you don’t know what you should be asking for!! The UK and Gibraltar is far more open to natural birthing techniques such as Hypnobirthing and the use of the pool for example.

Can you tell us a little about Baby Reflex?
Baby Reflex is specially adapted very gentle reflexology for babies and toddlers that is taught to parents and guardians so they can use it on their own children.

What is the difference between Baby Reflex and baby massage?
Baby Reflex is very different to Baby Massage. We only touch the feet and hands. We do not need to remove the baby’s clothes so it is a portable treatment! It can be done anywhere, even in the queue at the supermarket.

How might your baby benefit from Baby Reflex?
Studies have shown that the techniques taught in Baby Reflex improve general wellbeing, relaxation and sleep patterns. It is also useful for colic, coughs and colds, asthma, teething pains, wind and constipation.

These techniques need to be taught by a professional but I can say that any gentle hand or toe games (such as This Little Piggy) that you play with your child is giving them more than just a bonding moment with you! Never underestimate the power of touch..

If people are interested in your services how may they contact you?
