Interview with Jen O'Connor

What is your name, age and how long have you lived in Javea?
Jen O'connor, 35 years old, lived in Javea for 2 months.

What nationality are you and your partner?
Scottish

How many children do you have and what are their names and ages?
2 children, our son Fionn is 2years 6 months and our daughter Eva is 11 months.

 Do you work and if so what do you do?
I am a full time mum.

What was your experience of relocating to Javea with children?
Very easy

How well intergrated would you say you and your children are?

As much as we can be after such a short time, we live in a townhouse where most of our neighbours are Spanish.

What language do you speak to your children?
English

What is your impression of childcare and education in Javea so far?

From what I am told the Spanish education system is of an excellent standard, my son will start Spanish school in September, I have no experience of childcare on offer.

What school do your children go to?
My son attended The Firs school for 3 mornings per week and has attended their summer school. The staff are extremely friendly and competent and he thoroughly enjoyed his time there.

Why did you choose this school and are you happy with your choice?
I visited a mother and toddler group at the Firs when we first arrived, I liked the environment and competitive prices.

Where you live, how good are the facilities for children (shops, resturants, activities etc?)

I live in between the port and the old town, everywhere is child friendly, there are plenty of playparks and all restaurants and cafes are extremely accomodating of young children.

Are there any particular activities, groups, classes etc for children in Javea that you would recommend?

Mother and toddlers at the Firs on Monday afternoons, Grand Cafe to visit as they have a nice pool and playpark.

  What do you think are the main advantages and disadvantages of being a parent from the international community living in Javea?

The outdoor life for my children, the opportunity to meet a variety of different people and introduce them to a variety of different cultures. I have not come accross any disadvantages yet apart from not knowing the language yet.

Is there anything that you think would improve childrens lives living in Javea?
Not at the moment

What advice would you give anyone having a baby or thinking of relocating to Javea with children?

Don't stress the children will adapt better than the adults ! Try and encourage the children to mix with as many Spaniards as possible and embrace the culture.

What couldn’t you live without in Javea?
The friendly locals and the weather

What could you live without in Javea?
the length of time it takes to get phonelines, furniture delivered.......
