"There are 4 Holmes Place Health Clubs in Madrid the newest being at Palacio de Helio. Holmes Place has everything you would expect from a Health Club: Gym, Swimming Pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna's, Turkish Baths, Pilates Rooms, Yoga Rooms, loads of different activities, Personal Trainers etc etc. I was surprised at how reasonable priced membership is, especially in comparison to what you pay in the UK. Every year you get a wellness check with a Personal Trainer and a training schedule. The clubs also have 'Zensation' Beauty Centres. Holmes Place at Palacio de Helio is on top of the Commercial Centre - sit in the Jacuzzi with fantastic views over Madrid The clubs are aimed at Adults, they do offer Childrens Swimming lessons but are pricey compared to the Polideportivos, children are only allowed in the Swimming pools at certain times! But it is good to have some 'me' time! Look out for the Stainless Steel pools - very bizarre first time you use them.!" (SV, June 08)

"I first met Alex in a salon when he was working in the barrio Salamaca, where he was doing my hair for over a year. After I had my son Hugo I found it quite hard to find the time to go with the baby to the hair salon,so Alex started coming to my house. I think he offers a great home service - he comes very prepared with a portable wash basin so I don't have to stick my head over the bath and a small vacuum cleaner to clean up after himself. In a way, house calls are much better due to bad service and not being able to make an appointment at salons. Going to the salon can be a nightmare - I don't have 3 hours to spare sitting and waiting to get my hair done" (NB, Sep 09)

Arabic Baths and Restaurant
Recommended by Kathy Burke
Take a break from the stresses of life at the Hammam. During the 1 hour and 30 minute session, you can bathe in 3 pools, enjoy a massage and have some tea. On weekends, locals reserve a table at the restaurant upstairs for couscous and mint tea after their soak. For evening sessions, call in advance.

"I first went in with virtually no Spanish, but took a few photos cut from magazines. They took their time to understand me, despite the language barrier, and I have been going back ever since. Usually costs me about 60-70 Euros for a cut, colour and blow dry" (HL, Oct 10)
