I am moving to Madrid next month and have two boys, 2 and a half and 5 months. I understand my toddler will be entitled to start nursery when he is three (provided we can find him a place). At the moment he is with me all week long with his little brother and I'm just a bit worried about him starting nursery 5 days a week fulltime. Does anyone know if that is the case, or if you have the option of sending him part time? I don't have a problem with a 3 year old in nursery full time if the mum is working, but i won't be so just doesn't seem right and he still seems so young. Also I had high hopes of immersing myself in the spanish life and hanging out with spanish mums during the week but one walk round retiro last monday (we were over looking at apartments) soon made me realise that spanish toddlers don't hangout quite like they do in the UK, ie i saw none!! Is it really true that all spanish mums are back at work at 4 months and babies in nursery from then on?

Anyway, any thought and advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks
    Lorna

    HI Lorna

I am also moving to madrid next month and have 2 boys, one will be 3 in march and the other one is 10 months. My husband is Spanish and all his friends children all seem to go to preschool full time at the age of 3.My husband wants our oldest to start preschool in September but like you I feel hes a bit young to go 5 days a week. I am sure there are some nurserys which do part time, I will ask around when i go over in a couple of weeks. Are you looking for an English or spanish nursery? Which area of Madrid are you moving too?

    Hi Jane,
Great to hear from you. Don't mind english or spanish nurseries, though guess spanish will maybe be better for him in the long run. Would be great if there was a part time option out there. We found a flat in Hortaleza, opposite the park Pinar del Rey. Excited about moving, but at the same time dreading leaving friends and family. It is all so baby friendly in the Uk with baby groups and stuff all over the place. Doesn't seem quite the same in Spain. Would be great to meet up for a coffee and a run around for the boys if you fancy it. My email address is lornagrey@hotmail.com. Where are you thinking of moving to?

    Hi Lorna and Jane

Children are able to start school in the "Infantil" section when they are 3 or about to turn 3 depending which month they are born. So the ones due to start in Sept 2012 will be all the children born in 2009. As you both rightly say this is a full time option, 5 days a week. Applications start in Madrid in April so round the corner really, there is a fixed period where you can go and collect a form from the school you want to apply to, fill it in and then hand it back. I don´t know if you are aware that there is a points system eg: points for cloe proximity to school, points for having a sibling in the same school, for having a child with an illness/disability, and a couple more which escape me at the moment

My youngest son is due to start this September and my eldest started a couple of years ago at the age of 2.9 months as he is December born. I have to admit it has been a big, big issue for me as I really do believe it is too young for them to go full time. Both mine had been a home with me form day one. The problem is there aren´t really any other options, state schools do not offer part time places. The only other thing you could do is send them part time to a private Nursery but obviously being that they are entitled to start school at 3 anyway I never thought there was much point in doing this.

It is good that you know where you will be living, that way you can check out your local schools a.s.a.p, request a look around and try and find out as much as you can. Hortaleza is a nice area so I would imagine all the schools there are good

    Any more questions just ask!
