Positive environment encouraging self-esteem, autonomy and social responsibility. The school was established in 1990 and  is a fully private, English and Spanish bilingual school for students from ages 3 to 18. Along with the other El Limonar schools, el Palmar is run by a permanent Board of Directors. All El Limonar International Schools are authorized by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools of the United States of America and the Spanish Ministry of Education. Four features are central to the delivery of education at El Limonar International Schools: a bilingual curriculum of high academic standards; social and moral development; personalized attention; and extra curricular and complementary activities. Except for subjects taught in Spanish, which follow Spanish Ministry of Education programmes, the curriculum is based on the National Curriculum for England and Wales. It aims to prepare all students for both curricula of the final two years: one leading to the Spanish university entrance exam Selectividad (PAU); and the other leading to English A (Advanced) level examinations. Student qualifications are, therefore, the Spanish "Graduate in Obligatory Secondary Education" certificate, at the end of Secondary school, and an American High School Diploma, the Spanish "Baccalaureate" certificate and English A level certificates, at the end of their Baccalaureate studies

Comments:
"My daughter started at Ghost in April 2009. She had been attending the academy part-time for drama classes and was not happy in the Spanish schooling system. Since joining the academy full-time her confidence has excelled and her grades have improved from Grade E to Grade B. The friendly atmosphere and small tuition groups has meant she now looks forward to school and has wonderful relationship with her tutors. She has made lots of new friends with similar interests (performing arts) and now loves to be involved in the school musical productions and extra curricular activities. She is currently in Year 10 and is studying for a BTEC First Certificate in Performing Arts (3 IGCSE's) and IGCSE English literature, English language, Spanish and Geography. She continues with her drama classes and has learnt lots of new skills including stretdance, modern jazz, ballet and singing. Once she has completed her secondary education at the academy, she hopes to stay on and progress onto the college level course BTEC National Diploma in drama then continuing to University. Placing our daughter full-time in the Ghost academy is the best decision we have made and she thoroughly enjoys her studies." (JS, May 2011)

"One of the best International schools in Valencia. They have a Preschool for 2-5 year olds, an Elementary School for 6-11 year olds and the High School for 12-18 year olds. We had a look around the Preschool, as we were considering moving to Valencia. My husband works there during the week, and it made sense at the time instead of commuting twice a week. We had heard very good things about it, other than the long waiting list. We have a son of 2 ½ and considered the Preschool option. Whilst the facilities and teaching methods seem fantastic the prices were too steep, and waiting lists too long. In the end we weighed up the pro’s and cons of moving again, and uprooting our son and realised we were happy to stay in Javea. If you are thinking of moving to Valencia I would highly recommend this International School as it stands out from the rest" (LH, April 2010))

The British School of Alicante

Recommended by Carole Morgan

The British School of Alicante Image

The British school of Alicante has been established since September 2000 and opened with only 100 children. Eight years on the school now teaches around 630 pupils. The British School of Alicante takes children from age 3 right up until they are 18. So they can do all their studies at one school. British staff deliver the English National Curriculum while the Spanish classes are given by Spanish teachers. All children are taught in mixed ability classes, with children of the same age. Children may be taught English, Maths or Spanish in smaller groups if support is needed. GCSE and "A" Level option groups are also considerably smaller given the degree of subject choices at these stages.

Comments:
"My Son started BSA Sept 2007, he had to sit a small entrance exam but passed it fine. He dropped back a year purely because BSA sit IGCSE's marked by Cambridge and not GCSE's that are marked by Edexcel in the UK. The level off education is far higher then Jamie had in the UK and they are very committed to the children achieving the highest marks possible in their exams. For example he had never studied Spanish before, so instead off him being put into a class that would totally lose him, he and one other Russian girl have a Spanish teacher to themselves which is brilliant for them both. Most off his friends speak at least 3 languages fluently!!!!! Because off his age when he started there (which was 15) and he is a very shy quiet boy I was concerned about him adjusting, but I really didn't need to worry, he had the first day nerves but was allocated to another boy to show him around and has loved it every since. He has made lots of friends a mixture of Spanish & English (the school is 60% Spanish children) and they all seem to get on very well. He dropped back a year without any complaints and is very happy and his schoolwork hasn't suffered at all in fact he's doing better then he did in the UK. I would say I'm very happy with the school and so is Jamie, at his age to settle there so quickly was an achievement in itself and a real plus that his schoolwork is going very well. "I have two children that go to Rojales school one 4 and the other 8.  Obviously as any mother I was worried about my children going to a school where they didn’t speak the language but they have both settled in really well and their Spanish is really good.  The infants have just had brand new school built.  I would recommend this school to anyone." The British School of Alzira

The British School of Alzira Image

The British School of Alzira is located in a fertile valley of orange groves half way between Alzira and Tavernes de Valldigna. The mountains provide a beautiful backdrop to the four storey, attractive building which was originally built as a sanatorium. It's three swimming pools, two games pitches and large sports pavilion offer excellent opportunities for sporting activities whilst its several playgrounds and gardens allow the children to enjoy plenty of outside activities.
BSA caters for pupils from 8 months to 18 years of age. By the year 2010 there will be a full complement of pupils up to18 years old. The school is authorised by the appropriate British and Spanish authorities. It offers a complete British National Curriculum, from the Foundation stage through to Secondary (currently year 11). It also teaches the standard Spanish subjects demanded by the Spanish Education Ministry.
The school employs fully qualified teachers with many years experience who follow the DfES Numeracy and Literacy strategies and keep abreast of educational developments. Students have achieved very high results in British SAT examinations in English, Mathematics and Science in year 6 and the school is preparing for year 9 SATs, International GCSE's and 'A' levels in the years ahead.
The school is a learning community with high academic standards and a strong emphasis on the development of the individual. We value independent thinking as well as cooperation and teamwork. A House system in upper school reinforces this approach. A school psychologist helps students to improve their learning potential and students who need extra help in English are supported in a separate department. Reports to parents are issued every term and internal assessments to track student achievement are done on a regular basis. They organise many charity events and visits to places of interest which allow our students to appreciate the world beyond their home and school. Ages 1-18

"It is essential to attract an ever increasing number of International students.
Most of our students are trilingual and have enjoyed the continuity of being with us from the age of three years old. As such, they have developed a far superior intellectual ability to their monolingual peers, simply due to their accumulated experience. In the same way, British students generally learn Spanish soon after their arrival and tend to develop in a very positive way, both linguistically and in terms of their personal and intellectual development"

Waldorf or Rudolf Steiner education is a unique form of education from preschool through high school, which is based on the view that the human being is a being of body, soul and spirit. The specific methods used in Waldorf schools come from the view that the child develops through a number of basic stages from childhood to adulthood. The Waldorf curriculum is specifically designed to work with the child through these stages of development by using the natural rhythms of everyday life. The Waldorf approach emphasizes the role of the imagination in learning, developing thinking that includes a creative as well as an analytic component. Schools and teachers are given considerable freedom to define their own curriculum

Waldorf education was developed by Rudolf Steiner (1861-1925) at the beginning of the 20th century. It is based on Steiner's broader philosophy and teachings, called anthroposophy (literally, wisdom or knowledge of man).

Comments:
“At XIC my sons are learning in a friendly, caring, multilingual environment. I have the reassurance that, wherever they decide to continue their education at 18, they will have the benefit of studying the English curriculum and the opportunity to gain first or second language Spanish qualifications. The small class sizes and the commitment of the staff add to a great atmosphere in which the children thrive and are happy to learn”. (Lea Moran, Aug 2009)

“The great thing about XIC is the lovely family atmosphere. The focus is on the individual child, made possible by small class sizes”  (Rhonda Brown, Dec 2009)

"A fantastic school for all ages. My son went there from the age of 4 and was settled their pretty much straight away. He continued until his 9th birthday and changed schools due to us moving from Javea. But I would highly recommend it it you want your children to speak both English and Spanish" (Donna Jefferys, July 10)
